Magnus Carlsen Clinches Record 9th World Blitz Title; Arjun Erigaisi Wins Hearts, Praised by PM Modi

Doha: Norway’s superstar Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has once again proven why he is the world’s number one chess player. Carlsen showcased his endgame brilliance to claim a record ninth FIDE World Blitz Championship title, defeating Uzbekistan’s young Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the final.

Arjun Erigaisi Shines Despite Bronze Finish
India’s Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, who led the field in the semifinals, fell short against Abdusattorov and had to settle for the bronze medal. Nevertheless, Arjun won the admiration of the chess community with his exceptional performance and technique. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated him on his second consecutive bronze in Doha, highlighting India’s continued progress in chess.

Thrilling Finale
The championship match between Carlsen and Abdusattorov extended to four games. The first three games ended in a tie, with both players scoring 1.5 points each. In the decisive fourth game, Carlsen unveiled several unique moves that Abdusattorov could not counter, securing the match 2.5-1.5 and claiming the blitz crown. Remarkably, Carlsen had struggled in the Swiss rounds and was considered out of form, barely qualifying for the semifinals by the 11th round.

Semifinal Drama
After the 19th round, Arjun Erigaisi topped the leaderboard with 15 points, followed by US Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana with 14 points. Carlsen and Abdusattorov clinched the last two semifinal spots with 13.5 and 13 points, respectively. Arjun was seen as a strong title contender, but Abdusattorov defeated him 2.5-0.5 in the semifinals. Carlsen triumphed over Caruana 3-1 in the other semifinal to reach the final, eventually securing his ninth blitz title.

PM Modi Applauds Indian Chess Talent
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Arjun Erigaisi, saying: “India’s progress in chess continues. Heartiest congratulations to Arjun Erigaisi on winning the bronze medal at the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship in Doha.
