By Dipesh Sharma | Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have entrusted their star all-rounder Andre Russell with a unique new role ahead of the upcoming season. Russell has been appointed as the team’s ‘Power Coach’, recognizing his extraordinary ability to hit big sixes under pressure and his strategic mindset in high-stakes situations.
Turning Experience into Strategy
KKR CEO Venky Mysore revealed that the idea for this new role originated from discussions on how Russell approaches crunch moments in a match. When asked how he manages to score 15-16 runs per over when the team needs them, Russell explained that he always trusts himself and calculates that he can hit at least two sixes per over. Mysore noted, “This mindset is extremely rare, especially for players who bat in the final overs of a match. That’s why Russell was perfect for this role.”
The Concept of a ‘Power Coach’
Russell’s appointment follows KKR releasing him before the mini-auction and evaluating how he could continue contributing to the team. Mysore explained that the role is not just about teaching technique, but about imparting a specific way of thinking. Russell’s expertise in finishing matches, bowling in death overs, and exceptional fielding defines his entire cricketing identity. As the ‘Power Coach,’ he will mentor young players on how to strategize, stay calm, and execute under pressure.
First Coaching Stint for Russell
Although Russell has never formally coached before, he welcomed the opportunity. He expressed his intention to learn from KKR’s experienced support staff, including Abhishek Nayar, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson, and Tim Southee. While Russell will assume this coaching role, he remains free to play in other T20 leagues outside KKR’s global network. Mysore confirmed that Russell will participate in CPL, MLC, and ILT20 for KKR franchises, with no restrictions as long as there are no scheduling conflicts.
A Valuable Asset for Young Players
This new role highlights Russell’s signature ability to perform under pressure. His experience in finishing matches with powerful hits will now benefit KKR’s young talent, teaching them how to approach crunch situations. Russell’s transition from a star player to a mentor ensures that his winning mindset and big-hitting expertise continue to influence the team.
