Karnataka and Saurashtra Advance to Vijay Hazare Trophy Semis After VJD Method Comes Into Play

Karnataka defeated Mumbai and Saurashtra overcame Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, with both matches’ results decided using the VJD method.

Rain Intervenes, Matches Shortened
The two quarter-final clashes—Mumbai vs Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh vs Saurashtra—were played at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Rain interrupted both games, leading to shortened matches. Ultimately, the VJD method was applied to determine the winners. Karnataka emerged victorious over Mumbai by 55 runs, while Saurashtra beat Uttar Pradesh by 17 runs under the same method.

What is the VJD Method?
The VJD (Vijay Jayadevan) method is a system used to calculate revised targets in rain-affected limited-overs matches. It was developed by civil engineer Vijay Jayadevan from Kerala as an alternative to the widely used DLS method (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern). The method has previously been employed in the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and the Tamil Nadu Premier League. The IPL even considered using it in its 4th and 5th seasons, and the ICC once evaluated it as an alternative to the DLS system.

Stars Shine in the Quarter-Finals
Karnataka opener Devdutt Padikkal and Saurashtra wicketkeeper-batsman Harvik Desai were the standout performers. Padikkal scored a brilliant 81 off 95 balls, including 11 boundaries, earning the Player of the Match award. His performance this season has been exceptional, amassing over 700 runs.

Meanwhile, Saurashtra captain and opener Harvik Desai smashed an unbeaten century against Uttar Pradesh, scoring 100 off 116 balls with eight fours and two sixes, leading his team to a comfortable win under the VJD method.

With these wins, Karnataka and Saurashtra have advanced to the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, keeping their championship hopes alive.
