Ishan Kishan Injured Ahead of Namibia Clash: India Faces Opening Woes

India’s preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia have been hit by a major setback. Star wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan suffered an injury during net practice at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, adding to India’s already growing concerns after Abhishek Sharma was sidelined due to illness. This latest blow has left the Indian team scrambling to reorganize its batting order ahead of the high-stakes match.

Injury During Net Practice

A day before the game, Kishan was struck on the leg by a Jasprit Bumrah yorker during a practice session. He immediately showed signs of severe pain, forcing him to halt training. While the BCCI has yet to release an official update on the severity of the injury, there are fears that if he does not recover in time, Kishan may have to sit out of the playing XI. In his absence, Washington Sundar could be drafted as a last-minute replacement, though as a spin all-rounder, Sundar cannot fill the crucial opening role.

India’s Opening Crisis

With Abhishek Sharma already unavailable due to a stomach infection, Sanju Samson was expected to step in as an opener. Now, with Kishan also uncertain, India may be without both of its regular opening batsmen. Captain Suryakumar Yadav faces the critical decision of who will start the innings. Possibilities include Yadav himself taking the opening role or promoting the young Tilak Varma to the top order. Losing both primary openers simultaneously is a nightmare scenario for India’s lineup.

Recovery Before Pakistan Clash Crucial

The biggest concern for Team India is the upcoming blockbuster clash against Pakistan on 15 February in Colombo. While India may manage against Namibia with backup players, a strong and experienced opening pair is essential against a formidable Pakistani side. The Indian medical team now faces the urgent task of ensuring that both Kishan and Abhishek are fully fit and ready to take the field, so India can contest the match with its full-strength squad.
