Gautam Gambhir has recently been under intense scrutiny from cricket fans following a string of disappointing results for Team India, from Test defeats to ODI series losses. Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Gambhir might be removed from his position as head coach, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to finally respond.
Fans Blame Gambhir for Historic Losses
Gambhir has been facing criticism after India suffered a historic Test series defeat against South Africa on home soil and a first-ever ODI series win for New Zealand in India. The upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 is being viewed as Gambhir’s ultimate test; reports suggest that failure to secure the title could put his role as head coach at risk. The BCCI’s earlier silence only fueled these speculations.
BCCI Breaks Silence
Speaking to Sportstar, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia dismissed all rumors regarding Gambhir’s removal. He added humorously, “India is a country of 1.4 billion cricket experts, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is a democratic country, and no one can be silenced. People, including the media, are free to express their views.”
Saikia further elaborated, “Many rumors are circulating, and both former and current players, as well as others, are sharing their opinions. Social media is flooded with these.”
Decisions Rest with Qualified Committees
Regarding Gambhir’s tenure, Saikia emphasized, “The BCCI has a dedicated cricket committee, which includes former players, responsible for making these decisions. For team selection, we also have five selectors who are fully qualified for their roles. While there may always be differing opinions, the final decisions are taken by the cricket committee and selectors. These are the people entrusted with making the calls.”
Calls for Gambhir’s Removal
Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari had earlier demanded Gambhir’s removal, suggesting that if Suryakumar Yadav’s team fails to defend the T20 World Cup 2026 title, the BCCI should make a decisive and tough choice. Responding to this, Saikia confirmed that Gambhir will remain head coach until the end of his contract. However, the BCCI may reconsider his position if the team does not achieve the desired results in the T20 World Cup 2026.
