India Aim Big Win Over Netherlands in Ahmedabad; Abhishek Sharma Eager to Rediscover Form

Ahmedabad: Team India will look to register a commanding victory against the Netherlands in their upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match on Wednesday in Ahmedabad. The match holds special significance for star opener Abhishek Sharma, who is still searching for his first run in the tournament after back-to-back ducks.

Abhishek, considered one of India’s most destructive batters in the shortest format over the last 18 months, has failed to make an impact so far in the ICC event being played on home soil. He was dismissed for zero in the opening match against the USA, missed the second match versus Namibia due to a stomach infection, and returned against Pakistan only to be dismissed again without opening his account.

Despite Abhishek’s struggles, India’s batting has not suffered much, thanks to the excellent form of Ishan Kishan, who has provided solid starts at the top. Kishan’s confident batting, combined with India’s disciplined bowling, played a key role in India’s comfortable victory over Pakistan. However, apart from Kishan, other Indian batters have appeared slightly uncertain against spin bowling.

Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus troubled Indian batters with his unusual ‘round-arm’ and ‘behind-the-stumps’ bowling style, while Pakistan’s unconventional spinner Usman Tariq also managed to keep India from scoring freely. The Netherlands, however, do not possess a strong spin attack, and Indian batters will be expected to capitalize on the conditions and play with greater freedom.

Bumrah May Be Rested Ahead of Super-8

On the bowling front, India has the option to rest some key players before the Super-8 stage, including pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. After opting for Kuldeep Yadav as an additional spin option in Colombo in place of Arshdeep Singh, India is expected to return to a combination featuring two specialist fast bowlers.

Opponents Have Planned Specially for Abhishek

Known for his fearless approach, Abhishek has often been India’s match-winner in T20 cricket. However, his record of four ducks in his last six innings suggests that he may need to reassess his powerplay strategy. Opposing teams appear to have done their homework, placing fielders in areas where Abhishek prefers to target—particularly the deep cover boundary and deep midwicket region.

Abhishek himself has admitted that he does not possess as wide a range of shots as some other batters and instead relies heavily on using the crease and strong bat swing to dominate bowlers. With field placements tightening, he will need to adapt quickly if he is to return to his best.

Key Stats

  • India and the Netherlands have faced each other four times in international cricket, and India has won all four matches.
  • India have won 16 consecutive matches in ICC tournaments, with their last defeat coming in the ODI World Cup final.
