IND vs NZ: Sanju Samson’s Struggles Continue, Could Follow Shubman Gill’s Fate Ahead of T20 World Cup

Raipur: Alarm bells are ringing for India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson as his poor form in T20 cricket continues. Once considered a key player for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup, Samson’s bat has been silent during the ongoing series against New Zealand. In the first match, he managed just 10 runs, and in the second, he failed to open his account. This is not just a temporary slump; Samson has been struggling for consistency in most matches, raising serious concerns ahead of the World Cup.

Trouble for Sanju Samson
Samson’s last fifty came eight innings ago, and after scoring a century against South Africa in November, he has been unable to make significant contributions. After playing over 50 T20Is, his batting average has slipped below 25. Questions are now being asked whether keeping Shubman Gill out of the squad was the right decision. Adding to the pressure, Ishan Kishan is in explosive form, which could see him replace Samson in the playing XI if the latter’s struggles continue.

Shubman Gill’s Numbers Speak
Shubman Gill, who was left out of the main squad, has a strong record in T20 internationals. In 36 matches, he has scored 869 runs at an average of 28 with a strike rate around 140—considerably better than Samson’s current numbers.

Pressure Mounts Ahead of World Cup
With the T20 World Cup approaching, the spotlight is on Samson to regain form. If he fails to deliver in the remaining matches against New Zealand, the selectors may have to make a tough, potentially final decision regarding his place in the squad. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan continues to impress, having scored 76 off 32 balls in the second T20, including 11 fours and 4 sixes, along with strong performances in domestic cricket.

Samson’s next few games could be crucial in determining whether he retains his spot or watches from the sidelines like Shubman Gill.
