IND vs NZ: Samson Likely to Sit Out, Ishan Set to Return — Big Calls Expected in India’s Playing XI for 5th T20I

The Indian cricket team is set to face New Zealand in the fifth and final T20 International on Saturday at the Greenfield Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. While the match may not carry major significance in terms of the series result, it is expected to be crucial for several players as the team management weighs its final combinations.

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the match is the future of Sanju Samson, who has struggled for form in the ongoing series. The Kerala batter has managed scores of 10, 6, 0 and 24 in his last four outings, raising concerns despite being promoted to the opening slot after Shubman Gill was dropped. With pressure mounting, it remains to be seen whether Samson will be given one final opportunity at his home ground or rested in favour of another in-form option.

Ishan Kishan in Strong Contention

If Samson is left out, Ishan Kishan is the strongest candidate to replace him. Making a comeback to the Indian side after more than a year, Kishan has looked sharp in practice and impressed the coaching staff. Although he missed out on selection in the fourth T20, the left-hander is expected to return and open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma.

Ahead of the match, Kishan spent over an hour in the nets, facing both pace and spin, underlining his readiness for the crucial encounter.

Possible Batting Reshuffle

In case Samson is dropped, Shreyas Iyer could be handed his first opportunity of the series at the No. 3 position. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to continue leading the side, with Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh providing firepower in the middle order.

Hardik Pandya Likely to Be Rested

India is also expected to manage the workload of Hardik Pandya, with the all-rounder likely to be rested for the final game. Axar Patel is available for selection, while spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who sat out the previous two matches, could make a return to the playing XI.

The bowling attack is likely to be led by Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy handling spin duties.

India’s Probable Playing XI for the 5th T20I:

Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan / Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh.

As India looks to end the series on a positive note, the final T20 is expected to provide clarity on player combinations and future plans, especially with major tournaments on the horizon.
