IND vs NZ: Kohli Uncomfortable With Fans Celebrating Indian Wickets

In the first ODI against New Zealand at Vadodara, Virat Kohli came to bat at number three after India’s first wicket fell. What followed in the stands was unusual—fans, instead of showing concern, celebrated the wicket with cheers and applause. While this kind of energy is common in cricket stadiums, Kohli is not particularly fond of fans celebrating when an Indian wicket falls.

Fans Celebrate, Kohli Disapproves
As Rohit Sharma was dismissed early in the innings, the crowd erupted in joy. Similar celebrations have been witnessed in the IPL, especially when legendary players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni are batting. However, Kohli believes that such reactions are not ideal for the player walking back to the pavilion.

After winning the Player of the Match award against New Zealand, Kohli commented on this trend: “I am aware of it, and honestly, I don’t like it. I have seen it happen with MS as well. For the player returning, it doesn’t feel good. I understand the enthusiasm of the fans, but I try to focus on what I need to do and don’t think too much about it.”

Kohli also expressed his gratitude for the support he receives, saying, “I feel very blessed. To be able to do what I love and give so much joy to so many people—it’s a dream come true. I am living my passion, and seeing people smile gives me immense happiness.”

India Secures a Six-Wicket Win
On the field, Kohli narrowly missed out on a century, scoring 93 runs off 91 balls, including 8 fours and a six. This marked his fifth consecutive ODI fifty-plus score. Shubman Gill (56) and Shreyas Iyer (49) provided crucial support. Chasing a target of 301 set by New Zealand, India reached the total in 49 overs for the loss of six wickets, clinching a memorable victory.
