IND vs NZ: How Many Chances Will Gautam Gambhir Give? Sanju Samson’s Lean Run Puts His T20 World Cup Spot Under Threat

With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 fast approaching, the road ahead is becoming increasingly difficult for India’s wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. His repeated failures in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand have not only frustrated fans but have also raised serious questions about his place in the Indian squad, especially under the watchful eye of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Samson has struggled throughout the series, managing just 40 runs across four matches. His scores of 10, 8, 0 and a laboured 24 in the fourth T20I underline a worrying lack of consistency. Given extended opportunities at the top of the order, the right-hander has failed to make a compelling case for himself at a time when performances matter the most.

The situation is even more concerning considering the team management showed faith in Samson by leaving out established names such as Shubman Gill. However, that trust has yet to be rewarded. Samson’s inability to build innings under pressure has affected India’s batting balance, prompting debate over his temperament, shot selection and mental resilience in crunch situations.

Meanwhile, competition for his spot is intensifying. Ishan Kishan, despite battling his own inconsistencies in the past, has impressed with impactful contributions in the middle order and appears to be gaining momentum at the right time. Many former cricketers and analysts believe Kishan’s aggressive approach and ability to absorb pressure make him a stronger option ahead of the World Cup.

While criticism has mounted, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has come out in Samson’s defence, insisting that the Kerala batter is just one big innings away from regaining confidence and form. However, time may be running out.

All eyes are now on the fifth and final T20I in Thiruvananthapuram — Samson’s home ground. The match could prove decisive for his future in India’s T20 setup. A strong performance may silence critics and keep him in contention, but another failure could all but seal his fate.

With the T20 World Cup set to begin on February 7, the Indian team management is expected to take final calls on player combinations soon. If Samson fails to deliver once again, India may well turn to an opening partnership of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, signaling the end of Samson’s run in the shortest format — at least for now.

For Sanju Samson, it is nothing short of a do-or-die moment.
