Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has raised a strong call for Ishan Kishan to replace Sanju Samson in the playing XI for the final T20 against New Zealand. Patel questioned why the team management is waiting to make a decision, especially after Tilak Varma’s return to the squad.
Sanju Samson Struggles with the Bat
Sanju Samson has failed to make an impact with the bat in the ongoing T20 series, scoring just 40 runs across four matches against New Zealand. His lack of runs has added pressure on the team management and raised concerns about his form ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
In contrast, Ishan Kishan, making a comeback after nearly two and a half years, has shown excellent form, scoring 112 runs in three innings, including a blistering 50 off 21 balls.
Parthiv Patel Advocates for Ishan as Wicketkeeper-Batsman
Speaking to JioCinema/Hotstar, Patel said:
“If I were part of Team India’s think tank, I would give Ishan Kishan a chance in the final match, replacing Sanju Samson. Ishan should be the wicketkeeper-batsman going forward.”
Patel also emphasized that if Kishan is to be the primary wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup, he should start keeping in the upcoming matches, including the 5th T20 and warm-up games against South Africa, to ensure continuity and match practice.
Tough Selection Decisions Ahead
Even with Tilak Varma likely to return fully fit before the World Cup, the team will face tough selection choices. Patel added:
“Once Tilak Varma is back, the team will need to accommodate him. But the decision between Sanju and Ishan cannot be delayed any further. In the final match, Ishan Kishan should be given the opportunity over Sanju Samson.”
Ishan’s Form vs Sanju’s Struggles
Despite Ishan Kishan’s excellent form, he was left out of the playing XI in the 4th T20. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, who managed only 24 runs while chasing 216, was given another opportunity, sparking debates over team selection and the need for a clear strategy ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Patel’s strong stance reflects a growing sentiment that form and current performance must guide selection decisions, especially in the crucial lead-up to the T20 World Cup.
