IND vs NZ 1st T20I: Nagpur Police to Use AI to Manage 45,000 Fans, See How Security is Arranged

Nagpur: The much-anticipated five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand begins today, with the first match set to be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. The stadium, which has a seating capacity of 45,000, is expected to be packed to the brim with cricket fans.

The series also serves as a crucial trial ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, prompting both teams to give their all on the field. Fans can expect a thrilling contest, and with such a large crowd, Nagpur police have made extensive security arrangements to ensure smooth crowd management.

AI-Powered Security Deployed for the First Time in India
For the first time in the country, artificial intelligence (AI) is being deployed to enhance security and manage the crowd at a cricket stadium. According to media reports, AI cameras installed in the stands will monitor every individual in real-time. This will help detect and prevent any disruptive behavior or criminal intent, including attempts to smuggle weapons inside the stadium.

The AI cameras are also linked to police criminal databases. Any person with a prior criminal record entering the crowd can be instantly identified, alerting the on-ground security team for immediate action.

AI to Monitor Stadium Parking as Well
The AI system will also manage parking areas in real-time. Deputy Police Commissioner Lohit Matani explained, “The AI-powered inspector tool technology will scan thousands of faces in real-time using criminal databases. It will help identify anyone carrying weapons such as sticks, knives, or firearms and immediately notify the police. The system will also track vehicle occupancy and available parking spaces, ensuring smooth traffic management during the match.”

Background: Previous Tragedy in Nagpur
Nagpur has witnessed a cricket-related accident in the past. Around 18 years ago, in 2008, a match incident led to the deaths of eight people. Since then, the stadium has undergone significant upgrades. The ground has hosted seven Test matches, ten ODIs, and twelve T20 Internationals since 2008, including four T20Is featuring India, one of which was against New Zealand.

With AI-backed security measures in place, authorities aim to ensure that fans can enjoy the high-voltage cricket action without any safety concerns.
