New Delhi: As tensions escalated in Latin America following the U.S. attack on Venezuela, the world watched anxiously, divided in opinion. Meanwhile, the tiny Nordic nation of Iceland caught attention for an entirely different reason—its cricket board’s trademark humorous social media post. Known for poking fun at cricketing legends, including Gautam Gambhir, the Iceland Cricket Board took a lighthearted swipe at global politics, drawing indirect attention to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Tweet That Went Viral
On January 3, coinciding with the day of the U.S. military strike on Venezuela, Iceland Cricket tweeted:
“Venezuela has oil, Greenland has rare earth minerals. Fortunately, Iceland only has volcanoes, glaciers, and very average cricketers.”
The post cleverly referenced Venezuela’s oil reserves and Greenland’s minerals while simultaneously making fun of Iceland’s own modest cricketing resources. Given Trump’s repeated threats to claim Greenland as U.S. territory, many saw the tongue-in-cheek post as a subtle dig at the American President.
Players Take Offense
However, not everyone found the joke amusing. Some Icelandic cricketers expressed disappointment with the wording, feeling the term “very average” undermined their efforts. Responding to these concerns, Iceland Cricket re-shared the tweet on January 4, clarifying:
“Our players requested a change in tone. Instead of ‘very average,’ they prefer ‘extremely disappointing.'”
Iceland Cricket’s Signature Humor
Iceland Cricket, an associate member of the ICC, has built a reputation for witty and sometimes satirical tweets. In a previous instance, after India suffered a clean sweep against South Africa in a Test series, the board humorously commented about India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, tweeting:
“We have a vacant head coach position, but don’t apply if you’re from India.”
Such posts, often trending online, have become a signature way for Iceland Cricket to engage fans, blending humor with global and cricketing events in a uniquely Nordic style.
This latest meme highlights how even a small cricketing nation can use humor to make its voice heard on both sports and international affairs.
