ICC Takes Key Decision Ahead of T20 World Cup, Individual Evaluation for Bangladeshi Journalists

New Delhi: Following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup 2026 citing security concerns, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a major change regarding media accreditation for Bangladeshi journalists. ICC will now assess applications on an individual basis rather than through the country quota system. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sought clarification from the ICC on the new procedure.

Why the Decision Was Changed

Sources within the ICC explained that changes in the tournament schedule and the absence of the Bangladesh team altered both the number of requests and the priorities for media coverage. Previously, around 80–90 journalists had applied, but under the country quota system, the maximum allowed was 40. With Bangladesh no longer participating, ICC will now grant accreditation based on individual merit and need rather than national quota restrictions.

BCB Seeks Explanation

The move has caused a stir in Dhaka. Amjad Hussain, Media Officer at BCB, said the board has requested clarification from the ICC, describing the matter as internal and confidential. Many senior journalists expressed surprise at the sudden rejection of their applications. One journalist commented, “I have covered 8–9 World Cups, but this is the first time my application has been denied.” Bangladeshi media personnel are now awaiting the next steps from BCB before reapplying.

Background

ICC assessments indicated there was no security threat to the Bangladesh team in India. Nevertheless, the BCB chose not to send the team, resulting in Scotland replacing Bangladesh in the tournament. Starting on 7 February, the T20 World Cup will proceed without any official participation from Bangladesh. This incident highlights how the board’s decision has impacted not only players but also the media professionals covering the sport. ICC’s strict measures have left Bangladeshi journalists on the brink of missing out on World Cup coverage.
