New Delhi: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, one of the few Pakistani cricketers widely popular in India, recently sparked controversy after comments favoring the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the Indian Premier League (IPL). Akram, who has been associated with the IPL in multiple roles – first as a coach and later as a commentator – faced heavy trolling from fans on social media for his remarks.
Akram Favors PSL
During a PSL promotional event in Pakistan, Akram praised the league’s format, describing it as more player-friendly. While he didn’t directly mention the IPL, his comparison implied criticism. Akram said, “Players grow older, retire, and the league never seems to end. That’s why foreign players prefer PSL – it runs for only 34–35 days, unlike other leagues that last over three months. Most players can commit to this shorter schedule without issues.”
Akram also cited Australia’s Big Bash League as an example, explaining how shorter tournaments suit players better. “BBL initially started with a two-and-a-half-month schedule, but over time they realized it wasn’t working. Now they keep it around 40 days, which is similar to PSL,” he said.
IPL Fans React
Indian cricket fans were quick to react to Akram’s comments. Some mocked him, saying, “He is biting the hand that fed him” and “Players only play PSL after retiring from major leagues; three months is too much for senior players.” Other fans expressed that Pakistani cricketers often show envy toward the IPL despite having benefited from it in the past.
PSL Promotes More Talent
Akram also praised PSL for providing more opportunities to emerging talent. “When I talk to international players, they say PSL is number one for quality talent. We focus on skill over quantity, which is why PSL is ahead in terms of nurturing talent,” he added. Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi also echoed Akram, calling PSL the world’s number-one cricket league.
Despite the backlash, Akram’s remarks highlight the growing competition among global T20 leagues and the emphasis on player-friendly formats, which could redefine how top players choose tournaments in the future.
