Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur has set a major milestone in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), becoming the first Indian player to reach 1,000 career runs in the tournament. This achievement came during Mumbai Indians’ commanding 7-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants on 13 January at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai chased down 193 runs successfully, marking the second-highest successful chase in WPL history. Kaur played a masterful innings, remaining 71 not out off 43 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes, reaching her 10th WPL fifty in just 33 balls. She was well-supported by Amanjot Kaur, who scored 40 runs off 26 balls, forming a crucial 72-run partnership that shifted the momentum firmly in Mumbai’s favor. Nicola Carey then added 37 not out off 22 balls, helping seal the victory with four balls to spare.
Kaur’s innings also featured two key instances where she was given lifelines, both of which she capitalized on, demonstrating her experience and composure under pressure. This win strengthens Mumbai Indians’ position on the points table, moving them closer to securing a playoff berth.
Earlier, Gujarat Giants had posted a competitive 192/5, with Georgia Wareham top-scoring with 43 not out off 33 balls (4 fours, 1 six) and Bharti Phulmali contributing 36 not out from just 15 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 3 fours. Phulmali’s blistering late innings added 49 runs in the final three overs, including two sixes and a four in the last over off Amanjot Kaur.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s record-breaking performance not only led Mumbai to a historic chase but also cemented her legacy as one of the greatest Indian players in WPL history.
