Harbhajan Singh Defends Virat Kohli After Sanjay Manjrekar’s Criticism

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has hit back at Sanjay Manjrekar’s recent comments questioning Virat Kohli’s choice of format, calling them inappropriate and disrespectful to the dedication required to perform at the highest level.

Harbhajan Stands by Kohli
Speaking at a recent event, Harbhajan Singh defended Kohli, emphasizing that scoring runs in any format is never “easy.” He said,
“If scoring runs in any format were that easy, everyone would do it. Let’s simply enjoy the performances of those who are doing it—they are playing well, winning matches, and making runs. That’s what really matters. The format they play shouldn’t be questioned.”

Harbhajan also highlighted Kohli’s impact on Indian cricket and his role as a role model for young players. He added,
“Kohli inspires the next generation. Manjrekar is entitled to his opinion, but from my perspective, Virat has played a huge role in taking this game forward. He is an incredible player. Even today, if he were playing Test cricket, he would still be one of our key players.”

Manjrekar Questions Kohli’s Format Choice
Sanjay Manjrekar had earlier stirred debate by suggesting that Kohli chose to focus on One-Day Internationals (ODIs) because it is “the easiest format to play.” In an Instagram video, Manjrekar explained that opening in ODIs is easier for top-order batsmen due to fielding restrictions and the greater focus on run-scoring rather than wicket-taking. He noted that many Indian batsmen were happy to bat in the middle order in Tests but preferred opening in ODIs.

While Manjrekar’s comments sparked discussion, Harbhajan’s remarks reinforced Kohli’s standing as a legendary cricketer and consistent match-winner for India, regardless of the format.
