Gujarat Giants Defend Nine Runs in Final Over to Edge Past Delhi Capitals in Thriller

In a nail-biting encounter of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, Gujarat Giants held their nerves to defend just nine runs in the final over, defeating Delhi Capitals by three runs at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara, on Monday night. The pulsating victory handed Delhi their first defeat in the Vadodara leg of the tournament.

Once again, it was Sophie Devine who emerged as the hero for Gujarat, delivering a clutch performance in the last over to seal a dramatic win. Earlier this season as well, Devine had successfully defended seven runs against Delhi, underlining her reputation as a big-match performer.

Gujarat Post Competitive Total

After winning the toss, Delhi Capitals captain Jemimah Rodrigues elected to bowl first. Batting first, Gujarat Giants posted a competitive 174 for 9 in 20 overs.

Opener Beth Mooney anchored the innings with a well-compiled 58 runs, while Anushka Sharma, batting at No. 3, added a valuable 39. Lower down the order, Tanuja Kanwar provided late momentum with a quick 21 runs.

For Delhi, Shree Charani was the standout bowler, claiming an impressive 4 wickets for 31 runs in her four overs. Chinelle Henry chipped in with two wickets, while Marizanne Kapp, Nandini Sharma, and Minnu Mani picked up one wicket each.

Delhi Fall Just Short in the Chase

Chasing a target of 175, Delhi Capitals suffered early setbacks. Shafali Verma (14) and Lizelle Lee (11) departed cheaply, followed by Laura Wolvaardt (24) and skipper Jemimah Rodrigues (16), leaving Delhi under pressure.

However, a spirited late partnership between Nikki Prasad and Sneh Rana brought Delhi back into contention. Nikki played a fighting knock and remained unbeaten until the final over, while Rana added a brisk 29 runs.

Delhi needed four runs off the final ball, with Nikki Prasad on strike. Attempting a big hit, she was caught, sealing Gujarat’s narrow three-run victory. Nikki top-scored for Delhi with 47 runs.

Bowlers Seal the Deal for Gujarat

For Gujarat Giants, Sophie Devine and Rajeshwari Gayakwad led the bowling attack with three wickets each, while captain Ashleigh Gardner picked up one wicket. Delhi eventually finished on 171 for 9 in 20 overs, falling agonisingly short.

The thrilling win strengthens Gujarat Giants’ campaign, while Delhi Capitals will look to bounce back after a rare setback in what has otherwise been a strong season.
