New Chandigarh: India suffered a 51-run defeat against South Africa in the second T20 of the series, with the visitors posting 213 runs while India could manage only 162 all out. The loss has once again put India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir under scrutiny, not just for strategy but also for his unconventional approach on the sidelines.
Football-Style Coaching on the Cricket Field
During the match at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Gambhir was seen giving instructions to the captain and players from the dugout in a football-style manner. Using continuous hand signals, he directed the team much like a football manager does from the sidelines. While cricket decisions are traditionally made on the field by the captain, Gambhir’s style drew attention for being unusually hands-on.
Match Highlights
South Africa, batting first after winning the toss, scored 213 runs for 4 wickets. Quinton de Kock starred with 90 runs off 46 balls, including 7 sixes and 5 fours. Key partnerships included a 38-run stand between De Kock and Reza Hendricks and an 83-run partnership with captain Aiden Markram. Donovan Ferreira (30) and David Miller (20) added an unbeaten 53-run stand for the fifth wicket, taking South Africa to a formidable total.
India’s chase faltered early, losing 4 wickets for 67 runs. Tilak Varma tried to stabilize the innings with a 62-run knock off 34 balls, including 5 sixes and 2 fours. He shared a 51-run partnership with Hardik Pandya (20) and a 39-run stand with Jitesh Sharma (27), but the efforts fell short, leaving India all out in 19.1 overs.
Gambhir’s football-style coaching and India’s inconsistent batting have become key talking points as the team looks to bounce back in the next T20.
