Former Indian cricketer and ex-Baroda Ranji captain Jacob Martin was taken into police custody in the early hours of Tuesday after allegedly crashing his luxury SUV into three parked vehicles while driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred near Punit Nagar Society in the Akota area of Vadodara around 2:30 a.m.
According to the Akota police, Martin lost control of his vehicle due to overspeeding and intoxication, resulting in a high-impact collision that caused significant damage to the parked cars. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Based on complaints filed by the owners of the damaged vehicles and eyewitness accounts, the police registered a case against Martin under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. His vehicle has been seized as part of the investigation.
A police official stated that Martin was subjected to preliminary checks at the spot, following which he was detained for further legal procedures. The matter is currently under investigation.
Cricketing Career
Jacob Martin represented India in 10 One Day Internationals (ODIs). While his international career was relatively brief and unremarkable, he was a prominent figure in domestic cricket. As the captain of the Baroda Ranji team, Martin played a key role in leading the side to several notable victories and earned recognition as a dependable domestic cricketer.
Past Controversies
This is not the first time Martin has found himself in legal trouble. In 2011, he was arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with a human trafficking case, where he was accused of being involved in a racket that allegedly sent youths abroad using forged documents. Although the case drew widespread attention at the time, it had already dented his public image.
The latest incident has once again brought the former cricketer under the spotlight, further tarnishing his reputation and raising serious questions about his conduct off the field.
