First Retired Out in Women’s Premier League History: Ayushi Soni Called Back for Slow Batting

In the sixth match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, history was made as the league witnessed its first-ever retired out. The clash was between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians’ captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bowl first, putting Gujarat Titans in to bat. Ayushi Soni came in at number six but was struggling with her pace, scoring only 11 runs off 14 balls. With a strike rate below 80 and the team needing quick runs, Gujarat recalled her, declaring her retired out — the first instance of its kind in WPL history.

Gujarat Titans Post 192 Runs
Batting first, Gujarat Titans scored 192 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Georgia Wareham remained unbeaten at 43, while Bharti Phulmali, who came in after Ayushi Soni was retired out, struck 36 runs off just 15 balls at a strike rate of 240. Kanika Ahuja also contributed with 35 runs from 18 balls.

For Mumbai Indians, Shabnam Ismail, Hayley Matthews, Nicola Carey, and Amelia Kerr shared the wickets evenly, taking one each.

This score marks Mumbai Indians’ joint-second highest total conceded in WPL history, with Royal Challengers Bangalore holding the record of 199/3 against them in 2025. Gujarat Titans had entered this match on the back of consecutive wins against UP Warriors and Delhi Capitals.
