In a thrilling first semifinal of the ICC U19 World Cup 2026, England captain Thomas Rew played a spectacular innings to steer his team to a competitive total against Australia.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, England struggled initially, losing 3 wickets for just 60 runs. However, Thomas Rew showcased why he is regarded as one of England’s brightest young talents. The 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman played an aggressive, match-defining innings, scoring 110 runs off 107 balls, including 14 fours and 1 six. His century ensured England crossed the 277-run mark for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Rew was eventually run out on 236 in the 43rd over while attempting a quick single, but his innings laid a strong foundation, with the next highest scorer contributing just 40 runs.

Thomas Rew: England’s Future Wicketkeeper-Batsman

Born on 29 November 2007 in Lambeth, Surrey, Thomas Rew made his county debut for Somerset at just 17, primarily in limited-overs formats. Highly regarded as a potential future wicketkeeper for England’s senior team, cricket experts compare his explosive batting style to legendary keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist.

Rew also made headlines during his first-class debut for England Lions (England A) against Australia A, scoring 19 and 47 runs, surpassing his elder brother Jack Rew, who was also part of the squad.

Record-Breaking Performance Against India

Last year, on England U19’s tour of India, Rew set a record by scoring the fastest century for his team, reaching 100 in just 72 balls against the Indian side.

So far, Thomas Rew has played 1 first-class match (66 runs), 11 List-A matches (352 runs with 2 fifties), and 3 T20 matches (18 runs), highlighting his rapid rise in the English cricket circuit.

England will now hope his heroics provide the momentum needed to defend their total and book a place in the U19 World Cup final against Australia.
