India’s defending champions have received a major setback just days before the T20 World Cup 2026, with all-rounder Harshit Rana sustaining a knee injury during a warm-up match against South Africa. The 24-year-old fast bowler had to leave the field mid-over at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, raising concerns over India’s bowling plans for the tournament, which begins on 7 February.
Harshit Rana’s Injury Causes Concern
Rana bowled only one over, conceding 16 runs, before struggling with his run-up and eventually leaving the field clutching his knee. While the BCCI has not yet provided an official update on the severity of the injury, the manner in which he exited has sparked concern among fans and selectors alike.
Washington Sundar Still Unfit
India’s problems extend beyond Rana. Star spin all-rounder Washington Sundar has yet to fully recover from an injury sustained during the first ODI against New Zealand and has not joined the World Cup camp. With less than 48 hours to go before the tournament, the fitness of these two key players poses a potential headache for captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Tilak Varma’s Comeback Brings Relief
Amid these injury worries, Tilak Varma’s sensational return has brought some cheer for Team India. Returning from injury, Varma smashed 45 runs off just 19 balls, including three fours and three sixes, in the warm-up match. He also bowled a tidy over, showcasing his all-round capabilities and strengthening India’s middle order ahead of the World Cup.
