Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has reacted to the record-breaking IPL 2026 auction price for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, questioning Chennai Super Kings’ strategy and suggesting that CSK could have exercised more patience.
In a fierce bidding war during the IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) eventually secured Green for a whopping ₹25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. Both KKR and CSK were vying aggressively for the young all-rounder, but when the bid crossed ₹25 crore, CSK decided to back out, allowing KKR to clinch the deal.
KKR’s Strategic Play
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin criticized KKR’s aggressive bidding approach. He argued that if KKR had paced their bids more strategically, like other franchises such as Punjab Kings, they could have put CSK under greater pressure. According to Ashwin, KKR assumed CSK would inevitably buy Green, prompting an assertive tactic that forced CSK out of the race.
Ashwin expressed disappointment over CSK’s decision to let go of Green, emphasizing that the issue was not just about price. He described Green as a generational talent capable of leaving a long-term impact on the game. At the same time, Ashwin congratulated KKR on acquiring one of the most promising players in modern T20 cricket.
Cameron Green’s IPL Journey
This marks Green’s third IPL franchise. He has previously represented Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Last season, Green missed the auction due to a back injury and a lengthy recovery period, but his return in 2026 broke all previous records.
Now, all eyes will be on Green to see if he can justify the record price for KKR and fulfill the high expectations highlighted by Ashwin.
