
A controversy erupted in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) when Delhi Capitals’ wicketkeeper-batter Lizelle Lee was given out stump out during the match against Mumbai Indians. Following the incident, Lee has been penalized by the league.
Penalty Imposed on Lizelle Lee
Lizelle Lee has been fined 10% of her match fee and handed one demerit point for violating the code of conduct during the WPL match. The incident occurred when Delhi Capitals were chasing a target of 155 runs, and Lee was dismissed for 46 runs after a lengthy third-umpire review.
Lee accepted a Level 1 offense, which relates to the misuse of cricket equipment during the match. A WPL statement clarified that, in the case of a Level 1 violation, the match referee’s decision is final and binding.
Dispute Over the Stumping Decision
Television replays showed that while Mumbai Indians’ wicketkeeper Rahila Firdous dislodged the bails, Lee’s bat had slightly lifted off the crease, ending her pursuit of her third half-century of the season—just four runs short. During the post-match presentation ceremony, Lee remained composed and said, “The keeper took a really good catch. That’s all I’ll say.”
Delhi Capitals Secure Victory
Despite the controversy, Delhi Capitals won the match convincingly. Captain Jemimah Rodrigues made a remarkable comeback, scoring an unbeaten 51 runs off 37 balls, guiding her team to a seven-wicket victory while chasing 155 runs. This win strengthens Delhi Capitals’ position in the playoff race. Currently, four teams are tied with four points each, while former champions Royal Challengers Bangalore remain at the top of the points table.
