New Delhi: Shubman Gill has been left out of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, despite serving as the team’s vice-captain in the format. The young opener, who currently captains India in ODIs and Tests, was widely considered a potential future T20 captain. However, after a series of disappointing performances post-Asia Cup, the selectors decided to drop him from the squad.
Michael Clarke’s Take on Gill’s Future
Michael Clarke, former Australian World Cup-winning captain, believes that Gill could return to the Indian T20 team after the World Cup and potentially take over the captaincy. Speaking on the Beyond Cricket Podcast, Clarke said:
“Shubman Gill is still very much in contention for leadership. I don’t think much has changed. The squad had to be finalized at a particular time, and he wasn’t performing at the level he or the selectors would have wanted. India also has plenty of options at the top of the order.”
Clarke emphasized that Gill’s exclusion is temporary and only specific to the World Cup, explaining that the decision was based on current form rather than leadership ability. He encouraged Gill to use upcoming matches against New Zealand as a warm-up to regain form and showcase what he can contribute in the World Cup.
A Future Leader in the Making
Clarke added that it would not be surprising if Gill returns post-World Cup not only as a player but also as captain. “He is an exceptional talent. Right now, he’s not performing at his best, but I see no reason why Shubman Gill cannot step back into the team and take on leadership responsibilities in the near future,” Clarke said.
With this prediction, all eyes will be on Gill’s performance after the T20 World Cup, as fans and experts alike anticipate India’s next T20 captain emerging from this young star.
