
After India’s spectacular victory in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lauded the efforts of the team’s coaching staff and extended special appreciation to former India star VVS Laxman for his vision and long-term roadmap for junior cricket development.
India defeated England by a dominant 100-run margin in the final played on February 6 at Harare Sports Club, clinching the Under-19 World Cup title for a record sixth time. With this win, India have further strengthened their status as the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
BCCI Commends Head Coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Support Staff
In an official statement, the BCCI praised head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and his support staff for their clear planning and effective leadership throughout the tournament.
The board stated:
“The BCCI appreciates the clear and purposeful guidance provided to the team by Head Coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and his support staff.”
Special Appreciation for VVS Laxman
The BCCI also gave a special mention to VVS Laxman, Head of Cricket at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, crediting him for ensuring a smooth development structure for young cricketers transitioning into elite-level cricket.
The statement added:
“The BCCI would also like to extend special thanks to VVS Laxman, Head of Cricket at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, whose vision and roadmap have played a key role in ensuring continuity, stability and a seamless pathway from junior to elite cricket.”
The board’s recognition underlines the importance of structured planning and long-term development programs in maintaining India’s dominance in youth cricket.
How the U-19 Final Unfolded
India captain Ayush Mhatre won the toss and opted to bat first in the final. The decision proved to be a masterstroke, as India piled up a massive total of 411 runs for 9 wickets, powered by a breathtaking knock from young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Suryavanshi smashed an unbelievable 175 runs, while captain Ayush Mhatre contributed 53 runs. Several other Indian players also chipped in with valuable runs, helping the team reach a record-setting total.
For England, James Minto was the most successful bowler, picking up three wickets.
England Fall Short in Chase
Chasing an enormous target of 412 runs, England fought hard but were eventually bowled out for 311 runs in 40.2 overs.
England’s top scorer was Caleb Matthew Falconer, who played a remarkable innings of 115 runs, keeping England’s hopes alive for a long time.
However, India’s disciplined bowling attack proved too strong. All-rounder RS Ambrish was the standout performer with the ball, taking three wickets, while Deepesh Deevendran and Kanishk Chauhan claimed two wickets each. Captain Ayush Mhatre also contributed with a wicket.
