Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Rocked by Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Former Selector

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formed a committee to investigate serious allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct made by fast bowler Jahanara Alam against former selector Manjurul Islam and other officials during the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup. The committee has been asked to submit its findings within 15 days.

Allegations Against Former Selector

Jahanara Alam, currently based in Australia, revealed in an interview that Manjurul Islam and other officials repeatedly engaged in inappropriate behavior towards her. She specifically accused Manjurul of asking obscene questions during conversations, including inquiries about her menstrual cycle. Jahanara quoted Manjurul saying, “When your period ends, inform me, I want to see for myself.”

She further alleged that Manjurul had a habit of drawing female players close, pressing them against his chest, and whispering near their ears, which made the players uncomfortable. Representing Bangladesh in 135 matches, Jahanara initially remained silent due to fear of jeopardizing her career. Later, she formally submitted an observation letter to former BCB director Shafiul Islam Nadel and CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, reporting the misconduct.

Former Selector Denies Allegations

Manjurul Islam dismissed the allegations as baseless, telling Cricbuzz, “I can only call it baseless. You can ask other cricketers whether I was good or bad.” Coordinator Sarfaraz Babu also rejected the claims, requesting Jahanara to provide evidence.

BCB Responds

In an official statement, the BCB expressed concern over the allegations and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe, respectful, and professional environment for all players and staff. The board confirmed that appropriate action will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.

This investigation is being closely monitored by cricket authorities and fans alike, as it raises critical questions about player safety and accountability within Bangladesh cricket.
