New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has once again approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting that its matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 be moved out of India due to security concerns. This follows an earlier request that was rejected by the ICC, which had stated that it saw no security issues.
Detailed Security Concerns Raised
According to reports, the BCB submitted a new formal letter after discussions between its advisors and the Ministry of Sports’ consultant, Asif Nazrul, who has taken a firm stance on the matter. A BCB source told PTI, “The ICC wanted details regarding our security concerns, and the BCB has now provided them comprehensively.”
Implications for the Tournament
The T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on 7 February, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh is scheduled to play all four of its group-stage matches in India—three at Eden Gardens, Kolkata and one at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The current uncertainty around Bangladesh’s participation has cast a shadow over the tournament, particularly after fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was withdrawn from the IPL in India.
Divisions Within BCB
Inside the BCB, there are differing opinions. One faction supports keeping the team out of India, refusing compromise, while the other believes dialogue with the ICC and Indian authorities could resolve the matter if adequate security assurances are provided.
At present, the ICC has not issued an official statement on the matter, leaving Bangladesh’s participation in the India-leg of the tournament uncertain.
