Dhaka, January 23, 2026: The Bangladesh cricket team will not participate in the T20 World Cup 2026, dealing a severe blow to players’ aspirations and fans’ expectations. The decision comes after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), citing security concerns, refused to allow the team to travel to India. ICC sources indicate that Scotland is likely to take Bangladesh’s place in the tournament.
The team’s frustration was visible as captain Litton Kumar Das and his teammates left their hotel with subdued expressions, signaling their resignation to the fate dictated by the BCB and the government. Despite a meeting between players and sports advisor Asif Nazrul, players’ voices were largely unheard. According to sources, the meeting was not intended to solicit players’ opinions but merely to inform them of the situation.
One player, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The decision was already made before the meeting. Our views were not considered. The government and BCB had already determined the outcome.” Another expressed disappointment, stating, “This is a direct order from the government. Everything else is just a formality.”
Both T20 captain Litton Das and Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto reportedly emphasized their willingness to participate. However, officials cited previous incidents, security concerns, and the safety of spectators and media as reasons for maintaining their stance. They also noted that the BCCI had not contacted the Bangladesh team, raising further questions about the feasibility of sending the squad.
Players and sports analysts have expressed concern that this decision could significantly impact Bangladesh cricket’s growth and international standing, marking a disappointing chapter in the team’s recent history.
