Australia Faces ICC Group Stage Woes Again, First Time Since 2009

New Delhi, Feb 17: Australia’s campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has been underwhelming, with the five-time champions now staring at the real possibility of an early exit from the tournament. Only a near miracle can see the Kangaroos advance to the Super 8 stage.

Australia’s Struggles in 2026

Australia’s tournament has been hit by multiple setbacks. Captain Mitchell Marsh missed the first two matches, while key bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were unavailable. These absences significantly weakened the team.

Australia first suffered an upset against Zimbabwe and then faced a crushing 8-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in a must-win match. With just one game left against Oman, their chances of qualifying for the next round are extremely slim.

The Super 8 Qualification Scenario

In Group B, Sri Lanka have secured the top spot with three wins out of three matches. Zimbabwe are second with 4 points from two matches, while Australia are third with 2 points.

For Australia to qualify:

  1. Zimbabwe must lose both of their remaining matches.
  2. Australia must win their final match against Oman by a large margin to surpass Zimbabwe on net run rate and claim one of the top two spots in the group.

When Was the Last ICC Group Stage Exit?

Australia was last eliminated at the group stage of an ICC event in 2009. During the 2009 T20 World Cup, the team finished third in their group behind Sri Lanka and West Indies, failing to win a single match. That side, captained by Ricky Ponting, included stars such as David Warner, Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey, and Shane Watson, yet underperformed dramatically.

It has now been 17 years since Australia last failed to progress from the group stage of an ICC tournament. Interestingly, at that time, Virat Kohli had not yet made his Test debut, which would come in 2011. Kohli retired from Test cricket in 2025, marking the end of a distinguished era in Indian cricket.
