Australia Changes Captain Mid-Ashes: Pat Cummins Returns, Becomes Regular Player After Two-Test Hiatus

In a surprising development ahead of the third Ashes Test, Australia has announced its 15-member squad against England, with regular captain Pat Cummins returning after missing the first two matches due to a back issue. Cummins, who led Australia to dominant victories in Perth and Brisbane, will resume his leadership role from December 17 at the Adelaide Oval.

Cummins Back in the Fold

Pat Cummins had been sidelined with a back problem during Australia’s first two Tests. In his absence, Australia won both matches convincingly, building a 2-0 series lead. Head coach Andrew McDonald expressed confidence in Cummins, stating, “We believe he is as ready as possible. Net practice has sharpened his skills, and physically, he is ready to take the field. If all goes well next week, I expect him to toss the coin and don the captain’s blazer.”

Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, usually part of Australia’s first-choice attack alongside Cummins and Mitchell Starc, has been ruled out for the remainder of the series due to heel and hamstring injuries. Michael Neser has been drafted in as Hazlewood’s replacement, while Nathan Lyon is expected to return, although his participation in Adelaide remains uncertain.

Squad Highlights

Australia’s squad for the third Ashes Test:
Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.

Usman Khawaja, who missed the Brisbane Test due to injury, has also been retained, providing stability to Australia’s batting lineup.

With Cummins back at the helm and Hazlewood sidelined, the upcoming Adelaide Test promises key strategic battles as Australia aims to seal the Ashes series while England looks to stage a comeback.
