Ashwin Breaks Silence on Usman Tariq Controversy, Explains ‘15-Degree Rule’ and Umpire Challenge

New Delhi: Pakistan’s off-spinner Usman Tariq has found himself at the centre of a growing controversy over his bowling action during the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The debate intensified after Pakistan’s match against the United States on February 10 in Colombo, where Tariq delivered an impressive spell, taking 3 wickets for 27 runs.

Despite his match-winning performance, several critics and fans questioned whether Tariq’s bowling action is legal, triggering widespread discussions on social media and among cricket experts.

Amid the debate, Indian spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin stepped forward in support of the Pakistani bowler, offering clarity on the matter through a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter).

Ashwin: Only ICC Testing Can Decide Legality

Ashwin stated that it is not possible to declare a bowler’s action legal or illegal based solely on on-field observation.

“Let me try to clear this as much as possible. First of all, whether Usman Tariq’s action is legal or not can only be tested at an ICC bowling action testing centre,” Ashwin wrote.

Explaining the ‘15-Degree Rule’

Ashwin further highlighted the ICC’s 15-degree elbow extension rule, which allows bowlers a slight natural bend in the arm while delivering the ball.

He explained that it is practically impossible for on-field umpires to determine if a bowler is exceeding the 15-degree limit during live action.

“There is a 15-degree rule within which a bowler has to keep his elbow straight. For on-field umpires, it is impossible to judge whether a bowler is bowling within that 15-degree mark,” he added.

Call for Real-Time Testing Tools

Ashwin also suggested that cricket needs a real-time competitive testing system to reduce confusion and prevent false allegations.

“The only solution is a real-time competition testing tool. Things are unclear, and this lack of clarity should not be used to accuse someone unfairly,” Ashwin said.

Is Pausing at the Crease Legal?

Addressing another point of controversy, Ashwin clarified that if a bowler pauses at the crease as part of his regular delivery stride, it is not illegal.

“If pausing at the crease is legal or not, I believe it is completely legal because it is his regular action,” he stated.

Usman Tariq’s International Record

The 30-year-old off-spinner made his international debut for Pakistan in 2025. So far, Tariq has played four T20 internationals, picking up 11 wickets, quickly establishing himself as a promising spin option for the team.

With the controversy continuing to spark debate, the final verdict on Tariq’s bowling action will depend on official ICC testing procedures, as Ashwin firmly emphasized.
