Brisbane: England endured another defeat in the Ashes 2025, falling 2-0 behind in the five-match series against Australia. The Day-Night Test at Brisbane saw Australia clinch victory by 8 wickets, bringing them closer to securing the series.
McCullum Points to Over-Training
England’s head coach Brendon McCullum admitted that the team may have over-prepared for the match. Speaking after the loss, McCullum said,
“Honestly, before this Test, I felt we had trained too much. We had five days of intense sessions, but sometimes the most important thing is to feel fresh and have a clear mind.”
He believes this over-preparation contributed to England’s back-to-back defeats, putting them on the brink of losing the Ashes series.
Plan for Recovery
McCullum confirmed that England would revise its strategy and give players time to rest and recharge. Before the third Test in Adelaide starting 17 December, the team will spend some days at a top Australian beach resort to relax and prepare for a comeback.
“The players need a few days off. We will leave behind the intense work of the past weeks and plan a strong return in the series,” McCullum added.
England’s Historical Struggles in Australia
Since England’s historic 2010-11 series win, they have failed to secure a Test victory in Australia. In the 2013-14 Ashes, Australia dominated with a 5-0 sweep, while England managed only draws in 2017-18 and 2021-22, with Australia winning 8 out of 10 matches in other encounters.
With three Tests remaining, England must win all remaining matches to reclaim the Ashes.
