Sydney: The ongoing 5th and final Test match of the Ashes series between Australia and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground has become a historic encounter. Australia posted a mammoth total of 567 runs in their first innings, taking a lead of 183 runs over England’s 384. As the match stands on day four, Australia is poised to win, leading the series 4-1 unless there is a dramatic turnaround.
However, it’s not just the match result that’s historic. Australia has set a remarkable record in this Test, one that has never been achieved in the 144-year history of the Ashes series.
Australia’s Historic Feat: Most 50+ Partnerships in a Single Innings
Australia’s batting performance in this Test has been exceptional, with Steve Smith (138) and Travis Head (163) playing outstanding innings. But what really stands out is that all of Australia’s top-order batsmen have combined to form seven 50+ partnerships in a single innings—something never before seen in Ashes history. This is the first time in the 144-year history of the Ashes that either Australia or England has managed to achieve this feat. The first-ever official Ashes Test was played between Australia and England in 1877, but this unprecedented batting performance in Sydney has rewritten the record books.
Only One Other Instance in Test Cricket History
While this achievement is a first for the Ashes, it has been accomplished only once in the 149-year history of Test cricket. In 2007, under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, the Indian cricket team achieved the same feat in a match against England at The Oval. In that match, India also saw their legendary spinner Anil Kumble score his only Test century. Australia came close to surpassing this record in 2025, but a partnership between Alex Carey and Steve Smith fell short, ending at just 27 runs.
The Most 50+ Partnerships in a Single Ashes Innings
- Australia: 7 partnerships (Sydney, 2025)
- England: 6 partnerships (Adelaide, 1892)
- England: 6 partnerships (Brisbane, 1928)
- Australia: 6 partnerships (Brisbane, 2006)
- Australia: 6 partnerships (Brisbane, 2025)
Historic Record Broken After 134 Years
In the 144-year Ashes history, this is the first time a team has had seven partnerships of 50+ runs in a single innings. Previously, the record stood at six such partnerships, which had been achieved by England in 1892 (Adelaide). This record had stood for 134 years, with no team able to surpass it until now. With this achievement, Australia has rewritten the Ashes record books.
