After Pakistan, Bangladesh Takes U-Turn on T20 World Cup Exit; Government Advisor Blames Players and Board

Dhaka: After Pakistan’s recent reversal over its participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh has now become the latest team caught in a major controversy, following an unexpected political U-turn.

Bangladesh government’s sports advisor Asif Nazrul has sparked a fresh debate after shifting his stance on the country’s decision to withdraw from the tournament. In a statement made on Tuesday, February 10, Nazrul claimed that the decision to stay away from the World Cup was not taken by the government, but instead by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players themselves.

The remarks have triggered widespread criticism, with many accusing the government of attempting to shift responsibility and portray the players as the main culprits behind the controversial exit.

Asif Nazrul’s Sudden Change of Stand

Nazrul’s latest statement has surprised many because it directly contradicts his earlier remarks made on January 22, when he openly declared that the withdrawal was entirely a government decision.

At that time, he had told the media that Bangladesh chose to pull out because the country did not receive “justice” from the International Cricket Council (ICC). His statement had made it clear that the government was taking a firm stand and that players were only informed of the decision after discussions.

However, in his latest remarks, Nazrul has taken a completely opposite position, stating that the players and the board made the sacrifice to protect the nation’s dignity and the future of Bangladesh cricket.

Players Turned Into “Villains” in the Controversy

Nazrul’s comments have now put Bangladesh cricketers under the spotlight, as the government appears to be distancing itself from the decision.

Critics argue that this sudden narrative shift is an attempt to avoid political backlash, especially after Bangladesh reportedly received assurance that the ICC would not impose any ban and that the country’s chances of hosting future tournaments would not be affected.

ICC’s Stand and Future Hosting Assurance Behind the Shift?

Sources suggest that the government’s softened stance came after Bangladesh received confirmation that:

  • The ICC would not take strict disciplinary action,
  • Bangladesh would not face long-term restrictions,
  • and future hosting opportunities would remain safe.

This development is believed to have played a major role in Nazrul’s sudden change in tone.

Fresh Controversy in Bangladesh Cricket

The latest statement has only added fuel to the ongoing controversy, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.

With the World Cup already underway, Bangladesh’s political and cricketing circles are now facing intense scrutiny, and the issue is expected to escalate further in the coming days.
