Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi Fined by ICC for Confrontation with Umpires

Afghanistan faced a double setback at the T20 World Cup 2026, following their narrow defeat to South Africa in a thrilling super over. Now, veteran player Mohammad Nabi has been hit with a heavy fine and disciplinary warning by the ICC for breaching the code of conduct during the same match.

ICC Imposes Fine and Demerit Point

Nabi was found guilty of Level 1 offense under Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to failure to comply with umpire instructions during an international match. The incident occurred at the start of Afghanistan’s 14th over against South Africa at Ahmedabad. Nabi reportedly raised concerns about the color of Lungi Ngidi’s wristband, claiming it made it difficult to see the ball, and engaged in a prolonged argument with umpires Jayraman Madangopal and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid.

As a result, Nabi was fined 15% of his match fee and a demerit point was added to his disciplinary record. This is Nabi’s first offense in the past 24 months. According to ICC regulations, a player receiving four or more demerit points within 24 months faces suspension. Nabi accepted his mistake and agreed to the penalty proposed by match referee David Gilbert, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The Incident in Detail

During the 14th over, Nabi confronted the umpires over Ngidi’s wristband color. Despite repeated instructions from the on-field officials, Nabi continued to argue, which the ICC ruled as a violation of the spirit of the game and official directives. The fine and warning serve as a stern reminder for players to respect umpire authority during international matches.
