Adar Poonawalla Eyes RCB Franchise, Sparks Buzz with Tweet

New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), one of the most popular franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is reportedly on the radar of Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla. The buzz comes shortly after RCB clinched their maiden IPL title in 2025.

RCB’s First IPL Title and Potential Sale
RCB secured their first IPL trophy last season, 17 years after the league began in 2008. The franchise is currently owned by the liquor giant Diageo, which, according to media reports, plans to sell the team by 31 March this year. Following this, Adar Poonawalla fueled speculation by posting a significant tweet about his intentions to bid for the team.

What Did Adar Poonawalla Say?
In his tweet, Poonawalla wrote: “In the next few months, I will be placing a strong and competitive bid for RCB. It’s one of the finest teams in the IPL.” Although RCB has won the IPL only once, their fan base is enormous, rivaling franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, both five-time champions.

Virat Kohli: The Face of RCB
Virat Kohli, who joined RCB in 2008, has long been the face of the franchise. His rise in international cricket mirrored the growth of RCB’s fan following. Kohli captained the team for many years, though a title eluded him during his tenure. Last season, however, RCB triumphed over Punjab Kings in a thrilling final, a moment that left Kohli visibly emotional.

Kohli played a pivotal role in RCB’s title-winning campaign, finishing third on the list of highest run-scorers for IPL 2025. Across 15 matches, he amassed 657 runs, including eight fifties, proving once again why he is the heart of the Bangalore franchise.

With Adar Poonawalla’s expressed interest and RCB’s massive fan following, the IPL world is now abuzz with speculation about the future ownership of one of the league’s most iconic teams.
