New Delhi: Although Australia crashed out of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in the group stage, the team ended its campaign on a winning note with a dominant nine-wicket victory over Oman on February 20. The match proved historic for veteran leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who etched his name into the record books with a sensational performance.
Australia had already been eliminated from the Super-8 race following defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. However, against Oman, they delivered a commanding display — powered largely by Zampa’s brilliance with the ball.
Four-Wicket Haul and Player of the Match
Zampa returned figures of 4 wickets for 21 runs in 3.2 overs, dismantling Oman’s batting lineup. For his match-winning spell, he was awarded the Player of the Match — a recognition that helped him achieve a remarkable milestone.
With this award, Zampa now has six Player of the Match honors in T20 World Cup history, making him the second-most decorated player in this category. He has moved ahead of West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has five such awards in the tournament.
The all-time record for most Player of the Match awards in T20 World Cups belongs to Virat Kohli, who has won the accolade eight times.
Zampa Overtakes Rashid Khan in Wicket Tally
The 33-year-old leg-spinner achieved another significant feat during the same match. With his four-wicket haul, Zampa surpassed Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan in the list of highest wicket-takers in T20 World Cup history.
Zampa now has 44 wickets in 25 matches, edging past Rashid Khan’s 43 wickets in 27 matches. This achievement places the Australian spinner second on the all-time wicket-takers list.
The record for most wickets in T20 World Cup history remains with Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who has claimed 50 wickets in 43 matches.
A Silver Lining for Australia
While Australia’s early exit from the tournament was disappointing, Zampa’s record-breaking performance offered a rare highlight. His consistency and ability to deliver in global tournaments continue to cement his legacy as one of the finest T20 bowlers of his generation.
Even in a campaign that ended prematurely, Adam Zampa ensured Australia signed off with pride — and with history rewritten in his favor.
