New Delhi: Ahead of India’s second match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, the team management has received a major concern as star opener Abhishek Sharma is reportedly not fully fit. India is scheduled to face Namibia on February 12 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, but Abhishek’s availability remains uncertain due to a stomach-related issue.
Abhishek Sharma missed the team’s practice session on Tuesday, raising doubts over his selection for the crucial encounter. However, India’s camp received some relief with the return of all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has joined the squad and is expected to participate in training.
Assistant Coach Ryan ten Doeschate Provides Update
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, speaking during the practice session, confirmed that Washington Sundar has rejoined the team and will begin training.
“Washington Sundar joined the team yesterday and will practice today. Abhishek is still having some stomach trouble, but hopefully he will be available for the match in a few days,” said ten Doeschate.
The statement has sparked concern among fans as Abhishek Sharma has been a key performer at the top of the order, and his absence could impact India’s batting combination.
Relief for India: Bumrah Looks Fully Fit
Amid the injury worries, India received a positive boost as pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah appeared to be in good shape during the training session. Bumrah was seen starting with a light run before switching to spikes and then bowling at full pace to captain Suryakumar Yadav.
In an impressive moment during practice, Bumrah even bowled Suryakumar with sheer pace, indicating that he is returning to his best rhythm.
Ryan ten Doeschate also provided an update on Bumrah’s recovery:
“Bumrah hadn’t bowled for the last 10 days, but he is feeling much better now and his movement looks good. We will finalize the team after Friday’s practice session,” he said.
Strong Practice Session for Indian Batters
The Indian batting unit looked confident in the nets, with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma appearing in complete control. Both batters handled ‘mystery spinner’ Varun Chakravarthy comfortably. Tilak Varma also grabbed attention by smashing a massive six, estimated to travel nearly 100 meters.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar, who is returning after an injury, was seen cautiously taking part in fielding drills. He was also spotted having a long discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir before later bowling to Tilak Varma during the session.
Selection Challenge Ahead of Namibia Match
With Abhishek Sharma still recovering, Washington Sundar easing back into form, and Jasprit Bumrah nearing full rhythm, the Indian team management faces important selection decisions ahead of the Namibia clash.
India’s final playing XI is expected to be confirmed after the upcoming training session later this week.
