‘You Can’t Erase Awami League’: Sheikh Hasina Criticizes Yunus’ Pro-Pakistan Leanings, Praises India

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has publicly criticized Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the country’s interim government, accusing him of leaning toward Pakistan and destabilizing the nation. Speaking from India, where she is currently in self-imposed exile, Hasina highlighted the growing proximity of Yunus to Pakistan, while lauding India for its patience and continued support.

Sheikh Hasina Takes Aim at Mohammad Yunus
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Hasina said that Yunus lacks both the mandate and experience to conduct diplomacy. “He is pushing the country into instability. His repeated closeness to Pakistan is a quest for political legitimacy, not a service to Bangladesh,” she remarked. Hasina further praised India’s patience, emphasizing that the recent strains in Dhaka-New Delhi relations are temporary and stem from the illegal, interim administration.

On Death Sentences and Party Bans
Addressing the death sentence imposed by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and the ban on the Awami League, Hasina called it the verdict of a “kangaroo court” operating under an unelected interim government. She expressed hope that democracy would soon be restored in Bangladesh and that her party would regain its rightful role. “The Awami League is inseparably linked to Bangladesh’s history and independence. We have survived repeated attempts at political elimination, military rule, and assassination,” she added.

Awami League Support Remains Strong
Hasina reiterated, “Banning our party will not eliminate the millions who support us. The Awami League has been elected nine times by our people because we are connected to every village and neighborhood.” She pledged to continue the struggle for the people through legal, diplomatic, and peaceful means.

On Yunus’ Pakistan Ties and India Relations
Addressing concerns over Yunus’ closeness to Pakistan and attempts to provoke India, Hasina said, “Millions of Bangladeshis now understand his game. His tilt toward Pakistan reflects his desperation for international recognition. He lacks both the expertise and authority for genuine diplomacy, which requires long-term partnership and safeguarding national interests.”

Hasina also stressed the depth of Bangladesh-India ties, stating, “India is not just a strategic partner; it is a friend with whom we share culture, history, and a 4,000 km border. Once Bangladeshis are able to vote freely, they will choose leaders worthy of India as a friend.”
