With Folded Hands and Humility, PM Modi Receives Thunderous Applause in Ethiopian Parliament

Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a standing ovation when he began speaking in the Ethiopian Parliament, with applause reverberating for several minutes. Modi expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am honored to receive the ‘Great Honor of Ethiopia.’ I accept this award on behalf of the people of India, with folded hands and humility.”

Historic Ties Between India and Ethiopia
During his address, PM Modi highlighted the deep historical and cultural links between the two nations. “India and Ethiopia share warmth not just in our climate, but also in our spirit. Nearly 2,000 years ago, our ancestors established connections across oceans. Traders sailed across the Indian Ocean with spices and gold, but they did not only trade goods—they exchanged ideas and lifestyles. Ports like Adis and Dholera were not mere trade centers, but bridges between civilizations. Today, our relations are entering a new era,” he said.

Modi also recalled India’s historical support for Ethiopia, mentioning that in 941, Indian soldiers fought alongside Ethiopians for their freedom.

Shared Pride in Heritage and Patriotism
PM Modi further drew a parallel between India and Ethiopia through their national anthems, saying, “India’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram,’ and Ethiopia’s anthem both call our lands ‘Mother.’ They inspire pride in our heritage, culture, and beauty, and encourage us to protect our motherland.”

The Ethiopian Parliament’s prolonged applause reflected the deep appreciation and respect for India’s long-standing friendship with Ethiopia and PM Modi’s eloquent tribute to their shared history.
