Will RCP Singh Become the ‘Bairam Khan’ for Nishant Kumar? Signs of Political Realignment in Bihar

Patna, Jan 14:
Speculation is rife in Bihar’s political circles over a possible reunion between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his once-trusted aide and former Union Minister Ramchandra Prasad Singh, popularly known as RCP Singh. The debate has gained momentum amid discussions about the potential political entry of Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, and RCP Singh’s recent statements hinting at reconciliation.

Political observers are asking a crucial question: Has Nitish Kumar chosen RCP Singh to play a mentor-like role—akin to Mughal regent Bairam Khan—for Nishant Kumar, should he step into active politics?

Nitish Kumar has a long history of reshaping his party and alliances, often sidelining or re-embracing close associates based on political necessity. Leaders such as Upendra Kushwaha, Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, and Arun Kumar have all experienced this cycle of proximity and distance. In this context, renewed warmth between Nitish Kumar and RCP Singh is being seen as politically significant.

The ‘Bairam Khan’ Analogy

Bairam Khan was a legendary figure in Mughal history, known for guiding and protecting the young Emperor Akbar during his formative years. Acting as a guardian and mentor, he helped Akbar consolidate power and emerge as one of the most influential rulers in Indian history. Drawing parallels, political analysts suggest RCP Singh—who worked closely with Nitish Kumar for over two decades—could play a similar guiding role for Nishant Kumar in the complex arena of Bihar politics.

Rumours of RCP Singh’s Return

This is not the first time speculation has surfaced about RCP Singh’s return to the Janata Dal (United). Ever since he parted ways with the BJP and floated his own political outfit, murmurs of “ghar wapsi” (homecoming) have persisted. Several of his supporters have openly hoped for his return, seeing it as a revival of their own political prospects. However, earlier attempts never materialized.

The current buzz has intensified after both Nitish Kumar and RCP Singh attended a Makar Sankranti feast organized by the Patel Seva Sangh—an event seen as more than a mere coincidence. Notably, Nitish Kumar visited the Patel Seva Sangh Bhawan for the first time since 1993, while RCP Singh is a frequent presence there. Political circles believe such a meeting could not have occurred without the Chief Minister’s consent and careful consideration.

Slogans and Signals

Although Nitish Kumar and RCP Singh arrived separately at a dahi-chura feast ahead of Makar Sankranti, the atmosphere turned political when slogans of “Nitish-RCP ek ho” (Nitish and RCP should unite) echoed during RCP Singh’s arrival. When questioned by journalists, RCP Singh responded candidly, saying, “Nitish Kumar is the respected Chief Minister of Bihar and is liked by the people. Where does the question of us being separate arise? We worked together for 25 years. We know each other better than anyone else.”

Political Implications

The renewed camaraderie, public symbolism, and carefully worded statements have fueled speculation of a strategic realignment within the JD(U). If Nishant Kumar indeed makes a political debut, RCP Singh’s administrative experience and deep understanding of Nitish Kumar’s political style could prove invaluable.

While no official confirmation has been made, the developments suggest that Bihar’s political landscape may be on the cusp of a significant shift—one that could redefine leadership succession, party dynamics, and future alliances in the state.
