A Dramatic Political Shift in Maharashtra: BJP and Congress Form Alliance in Ambernath
In a surprising political turn, Maharashtra’s BJP and Congress have joined forces to win control of the Ambernath Municipal Council, a significant blow to Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This unexpected alliance, along with the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, has led to the election of Tejashri Karanjule Patil as the President of the Ambernath Municipal Council, a key political development in Thane district, which is traditionally considered Shinde’s stronghold.
BJP and Congress Secure Majority in Ambernath
The Ambernath Municipal Council, located in Thane district and a stronghold of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, recently saw a political shakeup when the BJP and Congress formed an unlikely alliance. Although Shiv Sena emerged as the largest party in the municipal elections with 23 seats, BJP (16 seats), Congress (12 seats), and NCP (4 seats) combined forces to secure a total of 32 seats, surpassing the majority threshold. This unexpected coalition has left Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction in opposition.
A Close Contest for Municipal President
The contest for the position of Municipal President became a prestigious battle between the BJP, led by state BJP president Ravindra Chavan, and Shinde’s faction, led by MP Shrikant Shinde. In a tight contest, Tejashri Karanjule Patil of the BJP defeated the Shinde camp’s candidate, Manisha Walekar, securing the position. BJP Vice President Gulabrao Karanjule Patil defended the alliance, stating that despite repeated attempts to negotiate with the Shinde faction, no response was received.
BJP’s Strategic Alliance with Congress
Maharashtra has long seen complex political relations between the Shiv Sena and BJP. While both parties are allies in the state government, their local-level competition often results in political conflicts. By joining forces with Congress, the BJP aims to strengthen its local presence ahead of the upcoming state elections. This alliance sends a clear signal that the BJP is prepared to leverage such strategies to secure its position in local governance.
A Coincidental Political Shift Amid Elections
This political development comes at a time when elections for 29 municipal corporations are underway in Maharashtra. While 24 of these corporations are contesting without the cooperation of Mahayuti allies, in cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Kolhapur, the BJP and Shiv Sena are running joint campaigns.
