The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Uttar Pradesh has created a political stir, particularly in West UP, as party strategists and local leaders scramble to assess the impact ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Political analysts warn that the changes could disrupt established electoral equations and directly affect ministers and sitting MLAs.
Major Cuts in Voter Rolls Across Districts
In Meerut district alone, 6,65,647 voters’ names were removed following the SIR exercise, leaving 20,34,185 registered voters. South Assembly constituency saw the highest cut with 1,54,739 names removed; this constituency is Muslim-majority and represented by MLA and Minister Somendra Tomar. BJP’s stronghold, Meerut Cantt, lost 1,49,000 voters, while Hastinapur constituency had 64,550 names removed. Similarly, SewaLkhas (RLD) lost 64,555 voters, and several SP strongholds including Sardhana, Kithore, and Meerut Sadar saw significant reductions, particularly in Muslim-majority areas.
In Sambhal district, 3.18 lakh voters were deleted from the rolls, with the highest number (99,093) from Chandausi constituency of UP Education Minister Gulab Devi. Former Minister/MLA Ajit Kumar Raju’s Gunnaur saw 95,311 voters removed, and other constituencies like Sambhal Sadar and Asmoli also recorded large deletions.
Muzaffarnagar had 3.44 lakh names cut, including 92,460 from Muzaffarnagar Sadar, represented by UP Minister Kapil Dev Agrawal. Saharanpur district witnessed 4.32 lakh deletions, with Saharanpur Urban losing 1,16,049 voters. Significant cuts also occurred in constituencies represented by ministers Kunwar Brijesh Singh (Devband) and Anil Kumar (Rampur Maniharan).
Muslim-Majority Areas Hit Hard
In Moradabad district, 15.96% of voters were removed, with the largest number from Moradabad Sadar (1,11,000). Other districts like Amroha, Bareilly, Budaun, and Bagpat also recorded significant cuts, affecting both BJP and opposition strongholds.
Political Implications
The voter deletions have already heightened anxiety among political parties. Analysts suggest that the SIR exercise could reshape electoral dynamics in West UP, impacting campaign strategies and voter mobilization efforts. Both ruling and opposition parties are now actively seeking to re-enroll eligible voters to mitigate losses.
With key ministers and MLAs seeing substantial reductions in their constituencies, the 2027 Assembly elections could see unexpected shifts in voter support, particularly in areas with high percentages of removed voters.
