West Bengal Elections 2026: Congress to Contest All 294 Seats Independently, Rules Out Alliances

Kolkata: Political activity is heating up in West Bengal as the state prepares for its assembly elections this year. The Congress Party has taken a major decision, announcing that it will not form any alliances and will contest all 294 assembly seats on its own.

The decision was finalized during a key party meeting on Thursday, attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and all senior leaders of West Bengal Congress.

Why Congress Chose This Path
Despite facing a significant challenge from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has not initiated any talks with Congress or its allies, even though it is part of the opposition’s India Alliance. In response, Congress has decided to go solo in the upcoming polls.

BJP Prepares for High-Stakes Battle Against TMC
Earlier, BJP National President Nitin Nabin held a strategic meeting with the party’s West Bengal MPs at the residence of Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar in New Delhi. The discussion focused on issues faced by the MPs and election preparedness. Following the meeting, BJP MP Raju Bista stated that Nabin had provided guidance and discussed key election strategies. The BJP is reportedly gearing up for a high-voltage contest against the ruling TMC.

CPI(M) Explores Possible Alliances
Meanwhile, the West Bengal unit of the CPI(M) is in talks with Humayun Kabir, head of the newly formed Janata Unnayan Party, fueling speculation of a potential pre-election alliance. CPI(M) Secretary Mohammad Salim confirmed that discussions on seat-sharing will take place within the Left Front. Salim had recently held a one-hour meeting with Kabir, a former TMC MLA, at a hotel in New Town. Humayun Kabir has recently been in the news for controversies surrounding the foundation of a mosque in Murshidabad district.
