Nagpur: Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) member Sandip Joshi, known for his close ties with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has announced his retirement from active politics. The announcement, made on Monday, came as a surprise following the results of the recent Maharashtra municipal elections.
Joshi, 55, shared a heartfelt letter on his social media, stating that his political journey has always been about selfless service and dedication, rather than positions or prestige. He expressed his disappointment over opportunism, political defections, and growing competition in politics, which he said has disheartened not only ordinary voters but also loyal party workers.
Making Way for the Next Generation
In his statement, Joshi emphasized the need to provide opportunities for younger leaders. “After careful consideration, I have decided to step aside from active politics to allow new talent to emerge,” he wrote, adding that he seeks forgiveness from the party’s senior leadership, including Nitin Gadkari and Devendra Fadnavis, for his decision.
Joshi clarified that he will complete his current term as an MLC, which ends on May 13, 2026. Following this, he will neither seek party tickets nor accept any if offered, stating that such opportunities should go to ordinary party workers chosen by the BJP.
Acknowledging RSS and Party Support
He credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for shaping his personality alongside his family and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities he received throughout his political career. Joshi highlighted that while continued opportunities would have been available to him, stepping aside ensures that no ordinary worker is deprived of their chance to serve.
Former Mayor and councillor of Nagpur, Joshi concluded by expressing pride in the BJP as a platform where even an ordinary worker can aspire to reach the country’s highest office, affirming his belief that his absence will not hinder the work or opportunities of others in the party.
