The Uttar Pradesh government has revised the date for the public holiday on Makar Sankranti this year. Initially announced for January 14, 2026, the holiday will now be observed on January 15, 2026. All government offices and banks across the state will remain closed on this day.
Significance of Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius (Dhanu Rashi) to Capricorn (Makara Rashi), symbolizing the start of the auspicious Uttarayan period. The festival is celebrated with traditional offerings such as jaggery sweets (laddus), khichdi, and donations of urad dal. According to the Vishnu Purana, donating rice on this day is considered meritorious.
Observances and Rituals
Astrologers note that the muhurta of spiritual merit (punya kaal) falls on January 15, as the Sun enters Capricorn during the night. Devotees are advised to perform acts of charity, offer food, oil, and other essentials to the needy, and engage in prayers, rituals, and bathing ceremonies (snan, tirth, tarpana) to gain blessings for longevity and good health. Lord Vishnu is particularly pleased with offerings of yellow items, including flowers, fruits, and garments.
The government’s decision comes after careful consideration of the solar transition timing, ensuring that the festival is observed in accordance with traditional astrological guidelines.
