UGC Bill Sparks Rebellion: BJP MLA Anil Singh Protests, Says ‘No Discrimination Against General Category’

Nawada, Bihar: Senior BJP legislator Anil Singh, four-time MLA from Hisua, has openly revolted against the UGC Equity Regulations 2026, criticizing the central government and the Education Ministry while remaining part of the ruling party. Singh joined youth protests in Nawada, raising concerns that the bill discriminates against students and teachers from the general category.

Speaking to the media, Singh asserted, “This bill unfairly favors SC, ST, and OBC communities while leaving general category students and teachers vulnerable. I stand fully with the general category, and I will continue to protest on the streets until justice is done.”

‘Bill is one-sided, blackmail risk rises’
The legislator termed the notification issued on 15 January 2026 as “one-sided.” He highlighted that while complaint redressal mechanisms have been provided for SC, ST, and OBC categories, there is no robust protection for general category students against false complaints or discrimination. Singh warned that removing existing safeguards could increase the risk of blackmail, questioning, “How is it fair that discrimination is prevented for some, but allowed against us?”

Caste divisions being sown in colleges
Citing the 2012 Digvijay Singh Committee and Supreme Court directives, Singh stressed that no student should face discrimination based on caste. He accused the current draft of working contrary to these principles and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’, urging an immediate amendment to the bill. He further indicated that some education ministry officials and party members had not taken the issue seriously.

Singh warned that if corrective measures are not taken, it would signal that colleges are being divided along caste lines. Meanwhile, protests by youth in Nawada have intensified, with the senior BJP MLA actively participating in the demonstrations.
