Balaghat (MP): Tensions have escalated in the Varud Panchayat of Katangi, Balaghat, where several tribal families have been socially ostracized after providing assistance during a local village fair. Following this, the affected families have been barred from accessing their agricultural fields and denied water from village wells, creating a climate of fear and insecurity.
Background of the Conflict
According to villagers, five tribal families faced restrictions imposed under the alleged name of “Rudhi Pratha Patel Government”, a local authority invoking traditional rules. Families were warned against protesting, with threats of being booked under the Tribal Act. The victims approached the district collectorate seeking impartial intervention and protection.
Chhannulal Patle, a resident of Varud, explained that 20 families had helped during the fair, but pressure was exerted on five tribal families by influential locals. Their access to farmland has been blocked, and they have been forbidden from drawing water from village wells. Villagers claim that any resistance could result in legal action under tribal laws.
Notices Issued
Reports indicate that Rajesh Madavi, Ajay Madavi, Mahesh Bhalavi, and Phoolchand Bhalavi allegedly issued notices in the name of “Rudhi Pratha Patel Government.” A notice was recently sent to Rohit Patle, inquiring about an alleged altercation during the village fair on 15 November. Villagers assert that such notices have no legal or constitutional validity.
Appeal to Authorities
On Friday evening, the affected families visited the collectorate, highlighting attempts to disturb peace in the village. They urged the administration and police to take strict action against those creating disharmony, ensure safety for ostracized families, and provide justice. Villagers warned that if the situation is not addressed promptly, tensions could escalate further in the community.
